Breaking News - Alex Ovechkin informs Washington Capitals management he'd be open to being traded
Alex Ovechkni has spent his entire career with the Washington Capitals. The Great 8 was drafted 1st overall in the 2005 NHL Draft. Since being drafted Ovechkin has done absolutely everything asked of him and has scored goals at a record pace. If it wasn't for lost seasons and COVID shortened season it's very likely that Ovechkin would have already passed Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record.
But Ovechkin has maintained throughout his entire career that winning is what is most important to him. According to Greg Wyshynski, winning is so important to Ovechkin that he has formed Capitals management that he has no plans to be apart of a rebuild during his chase for the All-Time record. That means one of two things for the Capitals.
1) They have to find a way to be competitive during the remainder of Ovi's career.
2) They can move the veteran to another team who isn't rebuilding.
It's difficult to believe that the Capitals would ever consider moving Ovechkin, but Ovechkin being open to the idea could certainly kick start the Capitals rebuild if they chose to go that direction. The Capitals unfortunately don't have a lot of internal help coming and that could be problematic as the aging team has already struggled to stay healthy.
This is definitely a situation to monitor.
