Corey Perry up to his old tricks, gets rare penalty and then drops the gloves with Mattias Ekholm
There are certain NHL players that just have the ability to get under a players skin. Corey Perry is that type of player. Perry has managed to remain in the NHL for as long as he has because of his ability to get under a player's skin. Without question Corey Perry is built differently than almost any other player in the league.
Last night the version of Corey Perry that other teams hate to play against was on full display. In the first period Perry found a way to get under the skin of Mattias Ekholm, a usually calm individual. Ekholm has played in over 700 career games and has only dropped the gloves twice before last night.
During the 1st period after an engaged battle between Ekholm and Perry things picked up. Perry grabbed Ekholm's helmet and tore it off his head. Due to the NHL's new rule, this would force Ekholm to leave the ice. Perry was immediately called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, but that wasn't enough for Ekholm.
Ekholm dropped the gloves with Perry and the two engaged in a short fight before Perry tossed Ekholm to the ice.
Both players receive fighting majors on the play. It's clear that Perry is already in mid-season form with hopes of finally winning another Stanley Cup after losing in three straight finals appearances.
