Insider believes Austin Matthews won't sign in Toronto long-term
Next summer Auston Matthews officially becomes eligible to sign a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whether Matthews will be willing to sign that contract or not. Earlier this summer Chris Johnston shared that he believed Matthews would be willing to sign a max term deal with the Maple Leafs.
But now Elliotte Friedman seems to be throwing some cold water on Johnston's report. Friedman believes that Matthews will re-sign with the Leafs but it won't be a long-term day.
I think he's re-signing in Toronto, I don't necessarily think it will be a long-term extension but I think he will extend, but my caveat always was, the big concern is what if this thing goes off the rails?
They do have to monitor how Matthews feels, I don't have any reason to believe right now that he's unhappy or he's got a big problem or anything like that, but they constantly have to take his temperature.

The Maple Leafs clearly can't afford to lose Matthews, but if the Leafs continue to struggle to find playoff success what reason does he have to say?
