Jack Edwards releases first comment about Pat Maroon 'body shaming'
Earlier this week, during a game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins, announcer Jack Edwards made a comment about Pat Maroon that didn't go over with many hockey fans. Some fans claimed that Edward's comments bordered on body shaming and they called for Edwards to be punished. The comments made, while insensitive don't truly justify a punishment like some would hope.
Listed at 238 pounds. That was Day One of training camp and I have got a feeling he's had a few more pizzas before then and now. Inadvertent fasting for Pat Maroon is like going four hours without a meal, But hey three Cups in a row who can argue with his formula?
Maroon, who wasn't a fan of the comment responded as only he could. Maroon opted to take the high road and made a donation to support mental health in Edward's name. The move has helped raised over $50,000 for mental health support in the Tampa Bay area.
Now Jack Edwards has finally opened up on the topic and has provided his side of the story, but stops short of issuing an apology for his comments.
I am sensitive to the subject of body image and I didn't intend to offend anyone. In the course of a two-and-a-half hour broadcast, it was a light-hearted attempt to point out that Pat Maroon, who I also regularly praise for his camaraderie with teammates through the years, uses his size to be a difficult competitor. He's an effective player with three Stanley Cup rings - something I also made it a point to say Tuesday night. I have reached out to the Lightning to connect with Pat.
It will be interesting to see if anymore comes of this situation, but for now it seems this is just another idiotic comment made by Jack Edwards. It's not the first and likely not the last.
