It was a very disappointing year for the Vancouver Canucks, going into the season many believed they could be a playoff team. They had all the pieces a place, with world class talent in Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser, and Elias Pettersson. While also having one of the best young stars in defenceman, Quinn Hughes and a very solid, Thatcher Demko as their starting goaltender
So what went wrong?
The Canucks got off to one of their worst starts in franchise history. With the lack of effort and results it didn't take long for the fan base to turn on the team, booing them out of the building on multiple occasions. General Manager, Jim Benning and Head Coach, Travis Green both ended up losing their jobs when team owner Francesco Aquilini stepped in.
Mr . Aquilini would announce the hiring of Patrik Allvin as the new General manager of the Canucks and Bruce Boudreau as the new coach. The Canucks immediately improved under Boudreau`s coaching and the fan base took to him immediately.
However, the Canucks failed to make the playoffs this year because of the brutal start, but many Canucks fans had high hopes for next season with Bruce Boudreau behind the bench. But yesterday Team President Jim Rutherford made a surprising announcement that will likely upset the majority of Canucks fans.
According to Rutherford the Canucks are NOT willing to negotiate with Boudreau on a new deal:
We would be willing to have him back under the contract that he agreed to when he came here.
Rutherford to clarify the matter, and he was clear that he feels «firmly» that Boudreau should work a full season before the club considers an extension.
Interestingly enough when Boudreau was asked returning, he gave a coy smile and had this to say,
I think they want me back and I know I want to be back, so I think it will work out.
Bourdeau and the Canucks have until June 1st to come to an agreement or Boudreau becomes a free agent.
