Major update on Mitchell Miller's contract with the Boston Bruins
When the Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller to an NHL contract they were hoping to have acquired a solid NHL prospect for free. Instead they received public backlash and a PR nightmare that ultimately led to the Bruins, like the Arizona Coyotes before them choosing to terminate his deal.
After the signing multiple reports surfaced that Miller and his camp had embellished when sharing the work he'd done to better himself. The Bruins came out publicly and admitted they intended to terminate his deal. However, nothing was said about it again.
Until today when Larry Brooks and Capfriendly revealed the following information:
per @NYP_Brooksie , the #Bruins have terminated Mitchell Miller's contract.
As his piece mentions Miller was not placed on waivers, rather both parties reached a settlement.
#CapFriendly has learned that Miller was officially removed from Boston's reserve list at end of April.
According to Capfriendly as of now the Bruins face no salary cap penalties for this, despite having reached a settlement with Miller. This entire situation could have simply been avoided if the NHL had placed Miller on their exemption list making him ineligible to sign a deal without league approval.
However, the league did not do that. Instead the league accepted Miller's deal with the Bruins and registered it accordingly. While this situation falls heavily on the Bruins, the league could have prevented this entire situation from happening.
