NHL once again proves they don't care about the integrity of the game as they announce referees for round 2 of the playoffs
Gary Bettman has made it clear, he believes that the NHL has the best officials in professional sports. Bettman's claims are baseless and throughout the first round of the playoffs the ineptitude of some referees has been on display. However, none of those referees has been more criticized than Wes McCauley.
McCauley has built a career on his overly animated penalty calls and making himself the star of the game. That was on display in the first round almost every time McCauley took to the ice. Many assumed his lackluster performance would be enough to get him benched for the second round.
However, that is definitely not the case. Today the NHL announced their lineup of referees for the second round and featured in the group is none other than Wes McCauley.
Gord Dwyer, Trevor Hanson, Jean Hebert, Steve Kozari, Chris Lee, Wes McCauley, Jon McIsaac, Dan O'Rourke, Kyle Rehman, Chris Rooney, Graham Skilliter, and Kelly Sutherland.
Fans reacted exactly how you might expect to this announcement.
It's always easy to blame officials for things they've missed, but truthfully the NHL's biggest issue of all is that fans know the names of their referees. When an official does his job and does his job well, there is no reason for a fan to know the name of a referee. That's what the NHL should be looking to breed, not promoting an official because he makes funny penalty calls.
