The Devils General Manager, Tom Fitzgerald met with the media during his end of year press conference. The Devils are in dire need of a true number one goaltender, and Fitzgerald is willing to move some future assets, including this year's first, to make it happen.

The Devils had a total of seven different goalies backstopping for them this season:

Nico Daws: .893 S% (25GP)Mackenzie Blackwood: .892 S% (25GP)Jon Gillies: .885 S% (19GP)Jonathan Bernier: .902 S% (10GP)Andrew Hammond: .860 S% (7GP)Akira Schmid: .833 S% (6GP)Scott Wedgewood: .880 S% (3GP)

The Devils two main goalies have contracts signed through 2022-2023 in Mackenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier. Blackwood at a cap hit of 2.8 million and Bernier at 4 125 million.

Blackwood was able to return and play two of the team's final three games. Meanwhile, Bernier said due to his hip, he may not be ready for the start of next season's training camp. Meaning for the third year in a row, the Devils need to address their goalie situation.

That position, as we know, is the most important position on any hockey team. Both these goalies know where I stand. Competition will be part of that department moving forward. Whether Jonathan Bernier is 100 percent at that time, I'm not sure that will be real. There will be competition in goal. I owe that to not only the players and coaches, (but to) our fanbase, ownership, everybody that is invested in our team.

We need another NHL goalie to challenge and be able to play lots of games for us. I don't know who that is.

The Devils have the fifth best chance at 8.5% of landing the number one overall pick . The 2022 NHL Draft lottery will be held on May 10th.

This list of possible targets likely include John Gibson, Connor Hellebuyck and possibly one of Linus Ullmark or Jeremy Swayman.
