Oilers G Mike Smith called for very rare penalty, snaps on official
Mike Smith is as old school as any goalie in the NHL. His NHL career dates all the way back to 2006-2007 and he knows all the tricks that goalies have user playing alongside some very good goalies during his career. He's also been known to push the envelope of what he can get away with.
Last night during the Oilers 5-2 loss against the Montreal Canadiens, Smith tried something he's used in the past but this time he got busted for it.
While the Canadiens moved the puck around the Oilers' zone, Smith opted to use his lateral movement as an opportunity to knock the net off of it's pegs. But the referee was having none of it.
Smith was given a 2-minute penalty on the play for Delay of Game and he was clearly unhappy about it.
My bigger issue with this call is the classic NHL inconsistency on this decision compared to similar plays in the past.
So what do you think?
