Defenceman Jake Walman and the Detroit Red Wings have both filed their arbitration figures. The team is looking for a two-way deal that would pay Walman $775,000 in the NHL and $225,000 in the AHL, while Walman has filed for $1,700,000 regardless of where he plays. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported these numbers earlier today.
Detroit only has the option for a one-year contract with Walman, as he is now 26 and just a year away from unrestricted free agency. He also doesn't have much of an arbitration case, having played just 76 games in the NHL.
Walman, was originally selected by the St. Louis Blues in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft. The Blues traded him at the last trade deadline along with Oskar Sundqvist and a 2nd round pick in the 2023 draft to Detroit Red Wings for Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski.
This is the final arbitration case to be heard this summer, but also highlights the holes in arbitration process. With a player like Walman able to request nearly double his market value, it continues to show why this deal hasn't come together.
