Top prospect suffers potential serious knee injury
The 2022 NHL Draft just concluded, but it's currently one of 2023's top prospects grabbing the headlines. Today it appeared that projected top 2 pick, Matvei Michkov suffered what could be a significant knee injury.
On the play Michkov carries the puck into the offensive zone towards defenseman, Alexei Emelin. As Michkov attempts to make a move, Emelin closes the gap and delivers a bit hit. The principal point of contact is definitely the shoulder, but as the larger Emelin pushes through the two players legs collide.
After the collision Michkov's knee straightens and bends awkwardly. Michkov immediately fell to the ice and was in significant pain. Michkov eventually made his way to the bench, but he did not return to the game.
A camera captured Michkov limping out of the arena with his knee wrapped up and headed to hospital for an MRI.
After the game Emelin gave the following explanation about his hit.
Am I supposed to let Michkov through to the center? I didn't beat him deliberately...
It was not knee on knee. I beat him by pure force.
Hopefully the MRI reveals less significant damage because it would be terrible for Michkov to miss significant time.
