In tonight's match between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins, Trent Frederic was assessed one of the weirdest game misconduct penalties of the year.
At the end of the first period, Frederic goes in and gives a fair check against Petry. In context though, with Frederic's rougher delivery and only seconds remaining in the period, the referees must have thought something more of it.
Frederic was assessed a misconduct and a 2-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct, probably for the context of the hit and wanting to start an altercation as well. Even though that may be true, what Frederic did was not offensive enough to earn a game misconduct, which gives us yet another bizarre officiating decision this year.
