Alex Ovechkin Stuns Former Teammate with Incredible Memory of his Record Chase
Olaf Kolzig, a former teammate of Alexander Ovechkin, was shocked when "The Great 8" hit him with his knowledge of his road to the all-time NHL goal scoring record
There have been many NHL players who contributed one way or the other to Alex Ovechkin's successful bid to break the NHL's all-time goal scoring record.
As "The Great 8" continues to celebrate in iconic fashion, he's also impressing a former teammate with his knowledge of how he got to 895 goals over the course of 1457 games.
Olaf Kolzig, affectionately known as "Olie" during his NHL career, was the goaltender for the Washington Capitals when Ovechkin had just started in the league.
He told his followers on X that he texted Ovechkin to congratulate him on his record, and was surprised when Ovi told him that he actually contributed in a special way by assisting on five of his goals.
Kolzig himself was not aware of that fact.
Even as analysts predict Ovechkin could go on to break more major records, it seems he's very much kept track of all the help he's had along the way, even down to seemingly minor details.
Ovi has been especially grateful to teammate Nicklas Backstrom, who has been there pretty much every step of the way to him breaking the NHL's all-time goal scoring record previously held by Wayne Gretzky.
Olie Kolzig played 719 games in his career, almost all of them with the Washington Capitals.
He had an eight game stint with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2008-09 before announcing his retirement.
