John Tortorella has been known to be a hard nose coach throughout his entire career. There's no shortage of sound bites, altercations with players media and officials to go around. Throughout it all it's just been chalked up to being a hard nose coach with a strong competitive edge. Now people are starting to see his demeanour on the bench a little bit differently.
Last night when the Philadelphia Flyers took on the Washington Capitals, cameras caught Tortorella absolutely berating rookie Bobby Brink; take a look.
the NHLPA needs to step in at this point
While the above video isn't very flattering, calling for the NHL's Players Association to step in and remove Tortorella as coach is going a little bit too far.
Hockey is a very competitive sport where emotions run high a lot more often than not. While I don't agree with how he went about it, it's likely Tortorella was caught up in the heat of the moment.
The one thing I will say though, is this: the NHL is not the same league as it was even 20 years ago, this is no longer how you get through to the vast majority of the new players coming into the league. If Tortorella doesn't adapt his way of coaching a little bit, I don't think he finishes out his contract with the Flyers.
