Higgins faces two counts of vehicular homicide charges, along with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle, having open alcoholic drinks in a motor vehicle, improper passing and executing of a lane change.
Vehicular homicide carries a sentence ranging from 5 to 10 years and is a second-degree charge. Because he's on two counts, he is facing up to 20 years in prison for the homicide charges alone.
Though Higgins will face severe time in prison, I doubt it will do anything to console the Gaudreau family while they have to navigate this senseless tragedy.
However, it is good to know that Higgins will most likely go away for a very long time if not for life.
The detention hearing is scheduled for team tomorrow, September 5th.
