IOC and IIHF discussing 3-on-3 tournament for 2030 Olympics

The Winter Olympics happen once every four years, and although National Hockey League players will be able to participate once again after being omitted for a brief period, it appears that the IIHF and the IOC have a mutual interest in introducing a 3-on-3 format in time for the 2030 games, which as of yet has a location that is not determined.

While the 3-on-3 format is a foreign concept to the games, it made its international debut during the 2020 Youth Olympics where sixteen teams(8 men's and 8 women's) comprised of a mixed national team participated. In 2024 during the next Youth Olympics they used the same format but using actual national teams who did not qualify for the main event.

<<«As a result, there's a lot of interest from member national associations, particularly non-traditional hockey nations. One of the big attractions of 3×3 is that it lowers the barrier for emerging hockey programs. Instead of needing a 25-strong roster, 3x3 has 11 skaters and two goalies. It's possible to use smaller ice pads, bringing many leisure facilities into competitive play for the first time. Tunisia is looking forward to staging the African Cup in 3x3 format, while Brazil has made an official application to host a women's 3x3 development event in the fall. Meanwhile, the smaller numbers help get close to the target of 100% eligibility on national team rosters at development events.»>>

While this concept seems interesting, fans will likely look at it and wonder why. If it's not broke, don't fix it right? But much like having test events at an Olympic Games and adding new sports, it will allow people to experience something new. The games have adopted events that were originally showcased at the X games and they have been a big hit, it could be very cool to watch an international roller hockey tournament at a Summer Games.

While fans should not get their hopes up, the idea that the two organizations are discussing this is promising and exciting. Imagine having Connor Bedard playing against Auston Matthews during a 3-on-3 game either on ice or while rollerblading.
