Adam Johnson was killed when he collided with Matt Petgrave in October of 2023. Petgrave's skate came up during the collision and hit Johnson in the neck. Johnson, who played 13 games in the NHL, all with the Pittsburgh Penguins,
tragically passed away on the ice in front of 8000 hockey fans. While Petgrave was arrested and granted bail, he has yet to be formally charged in the incident. Johnson's death has led to several hockey leagues either strongly suggesting, or making it mandatory for players to wear cut-resistant clothing under their gear during games.
