Former Stanley Cup champion Erik Johnson played for the Colorado Avalanche and the Philadelphia Flyers last season. His name has emerged as a professional tryout candidate for the New York Rangers with a hole in the lineup and limited cap space. There's been an update issued on the defenseman.
Former Stanley Cup champion Erik Johnson is popular these days.
The defenseman has emerged as a PTO (professional tryout) candidate for multiple NHL teams, according to reports from Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports.
Johnson, originally a 1st overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, has won one Stanley Cup in his career and has plenty of experience and leadership to offer the next team that signs him.
He's played 1,023 games and scored 95-253-348 points during his career, which began with the St. Louis Blues.
Are the New York Rangers still in on Erik Johnson?
Jesse Montano didn't divulge the names of the three NHL teams that have sent an offer for Johnson for a PTO.
But we speculate that with only $770K available, there's a chance that Chris Drury would love to tap into that money and find suitable talent for that price.
Erik Johnson played for both the Colorado Avalanche and the Philadelphia Flyers last season.
The veteran defenseman suited up for 36 games and scored 2-3-5 points in that period.
He played a gritty shutdown style of defense, which would patch a hole on the blueline in New York.
While he's arguably past his prime, veterans like Johnson still have more than just your typical tangibles on the ice to add to their next team.
He brings the kind of leadership that delivers Stanley Cup wins.
