The Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Ben Danford in the first round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, although a winger for the San Jose Sharks is making them regret that decision.

Ben Danford is currently playing in the World Juniors, and there is a realistic scenario in which he goes all the way to the Gold Medal game.
However, his NHL potential is still to be determined. Some feel as though he is a lock to be with the team in a few years, but not everyone feels the same way.
As it turns out, there is a forward on the San Jose Sharks who is making the Danford selection seem like a bit of a mistake.

Igor Chernyshov is the real deal

That player in question is Igor Chernyshov. He was drafted 33rd overall, compared to Danford, who was selected 31st overall.
The Maple Leafs could have drafted Chernyshov, but they opted to take a chance on Danford instead, which was a controversial decision at the time.
Interestingly enough, Chernyshov is already playing with the Sharks, and he has been a revelation for the team in his first seven games.
He already has a total of eight points, including three goals, while playing alongside future Olympian Macklin Celebrini.
These statistics are extremely impressive, and you can't help but feel like the Toronto Maple Leafs could be using this kid right about now.
Of course, Danford may develop into an elite defenseman, but there is no predicting that. Instead, we can already see how good Chernyshov is.
For San Jose, this is just further proof that their franchise has a very bright future, and may soon find themselves in the playoffs ahead of schedule.
