On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenseman Dakota Mermis on waivers, and now, we officially know the fate of the player.
Dakota Mermis was placed on waivers yesterday as the Toronto Maple Leafs had a surplus of defenseman on their roster and needed to make a move.
According to Elliotte Friedman, everyone placed on waivers yesterday ended up clearing. This means Mermis is going to the Toronto Marlies.
Mermis is a player who bounced around waivers last season. He started with the Toronto Maple Leafs, then went to the Utah Mammoth before returning to Toronto.
By not getting claimed, Mermis gets to maintain some stability and stay in Toronto, which is the home of the Maple Leafs and the Marlies.
For the most part, Mermis has been a solid depth option for the Leafs, and there is no denying that the organization is happy to keep him around.
If there are any major injuries on the Leafs throughout the rest of the season, it is easy to assume that it will be Mermis who gets called up.
Having said that, we are very interested to see what Mermis' future in Toronto will be beyond just this season.
It feels like the Maple Leafs might let Mermis go, especially since the 32-year-old will be looking for a solid NHL opportunity.
The Maple Leafs have not been able to provide that, so this shouldn't come as that much of a surprise.
Only time will tell what happens with Mermis, and if he is able to continue to show the Leafs he belongs on the roster.
