Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has numerous different players on his wish list, but according to Darren Dreger, it's really not that easy.
Brad Treliving is in a very difficult spot right now, as his team is currently eight points out of a playoff spot with just 30 games to go.
The team is going on a four-game road trip before the Olympics, and then a month after that, it will be the NHL trade deadline.
For months now, the Leafs have been trying to acquire a right-handed puck-moving defenseman. First up on their list was Rasmus Andersson, but that didn't work out.
Now, the Leafs are trying to go after Dougie Hamilton, but with the injuries piling on in New Jersey, it would appear as though Hamilton is off limits.
Brad Treliving gets a dose of reality
According to Darren Dreger, Brad Treliving is facing a particularly harsh reality right now. Despite eyeing defensemen, there is no one on the market.
We know that Treliving is still eyeing a defenseman, well if there was a piece that he could bring in he woulda done that by now, there's nobody available that moves the needle
The Leafs are reportedly waiting to see how the next four games go before making a decision on whether or not to be buyers or sellers.
If the Maple Leafs continue to lose games, then all of this defenseman talk will be moot. The Leafs will have to shift into becoming sellers.
At this point, Brad Treliving is in real trouble, and we're not sure what he can do to get out of it, except make some moves that actually make this team better.
Over the last year, he has only made the team worse, and fans are starting to get upset with the product they have seen on the ice. If it doesn't get better, Treliving is going to have to go.
