Don Cherry snubbed from major Canadian honor and some hockey fans are upset

Former Hockey Night in Canada personality Don Cherry has been ostracized from the hockey world over the last few years, and he continues to lose opportunities.
A few years ago, Don Cherry lost his job with Hockey Night in Canada after some comments he made about poppies, immigrants, and Remembrance Day.
Overall, it was a controversial decision at the time, and there are still hockey fans who are upset about it. Even Cherry himself takes shots at Sportsnet sometimes.
On a mainstream level, Cherry barely exists anymore. He has faded into relative obscurity and has officially retired from podcasting and the media as a whole.
Having said that, given his past, it should come as no surprise that the former NHL coach was passed over for a major Canadian award.
Don Cherry misses out on the Order of Canada
The Order of Canada is awarded every year to select celebrities and notable figures in Canadian culture. Once again, Cherry was left out.
There were lots of fans online who were upset about this, and they let their feelings be known by taking to X and calling out the Canadian government.
Quite frankly, the public should not be surprised to see Cherry get ostracized from this kind of award. Sure, he has some fans out there, but the majority of people have a negative view of him.
He is simply way too polarizing to give the Order of Canada. While it may make some hockey fans feel good, there is a larger contingent who would hate such an appointment.
Cherry made his choices as a broadcaster, and now, he is simply dealing with the consequences. Whether you agree with those consequences is up to you.
Perhaps Cherry may get it in future years, but that simply remains to be seen.
