Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi made a brutal mistake against the Columbus Blue Jackets last night, and it is yet another example of his horrendous season.
Last night was a difficult game for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they lost to the Columbus Blue Jackets by a score of 3-2 in overtime.
This was a winnable game, especially with Dakota Mermis scoring his first goal in two seasons. However, despite some solid goaltending from Joseph Woll, it just wasn't enough to get it done.
In fact, the game-winning goal from the Blue Jackets is receiving lots of scrutiny right now, and forward Max Domi is at the center of it all, for very good reason.
Max Domi becomes the face of another Maple Leafs loss
As you can see in the clip down below, Max Domi tried to force a pass through the middle of the ice, and it led to one of the worst turnovers you are ever going to see.
From there, Domi failed to cut off the play as he was the last line of defense between the shooter and Woll. Adam Fantilli scored the goal, and the rest was history.
After the game, fans took to social media, where they were absolutely livid with Domi. The comments were pretty brutal, with some claiming he is a beneficiary of nepotism.
These comments were brutal, but they do showcase a worrying trend when it comes to Domi, and his poor play over these last few seasons.
Max Domi's career stats in decline
Max Domi has had one of the most inconsistent careers of any player on the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the stats prove this. For instance, last season, he had just 33 points. The season before that, he had 47, while in 2022-23, he had 56 points.
His best statistical season was all the way back in 2018-19 when he was playing for the Montreal Canadiens. That season, he had 28 goals and a total of 72 points.
However, since that time, he has been up and down, and it has been a struggle for him to find any sort of consistency. With just six points in 21 games this season, you have to wonder if Domi is even worth the trouble.
With a salary of $3.75 million per season, there is no doubt that very few teams around the league would even want him. The Leafs would likely have to retain salary if they seriously considered trading him.
