Following a bad loss over the weekend, the Toronto Maple Leafs have reached a pathetic low that was only seen prior to Auston Matthews' arrival.
On Saturday, the Toronto Maple Leafs lost 5-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in what some are considering to be the team's worst game of the entire season.
Despite a strong start, the Leafs found themselves down 2-0 after the first period. Halfway through the second period, it was 4-0, and in a bid to inject some urgency into his team, head coach Craig Berube pulled Joseph Woll.
On Sunday, things got even worse for the Leafs as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Carolina Hurricanes. Typically, the Leafs would not be paying attention to the Sabres. However, it's impossible not to when you consider the stakes.
With this win, the Sabres leapfrogged the Leafs for seventh in the Atlantic Division. Not only did this put the Leafs in last place in the Atlantic, but it put them in last place in the Eastern Conference as a whole.
Toronto Maple Leafs reach the depths of the Atlantic Division
New reporting from Money Puck uncovers something truly concerning about the Leafs and their season thus far. In fact, it goes well beyond just being last place in the Atlantic Division.
As it stands, their chances of making the playoffs stand at just 6.8 percent. That is lower than their chances of getting the first overall pick, which would likely be Gavin McKenna.
Simply put, this is disastrous for the Maple Leafs. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It can't be understated that this team is dealing with a plethora of injuries.
If you are a fan, you can't help but wonder if the team should just start tanking. After all, it appears as though a tank has a higher degree of success than a playoff push right now.
