Woll's game was showing some cracks on Saturday, and it is not surprising when you consider how that game was his fourth start in a row.
Anthony Stolarz was also overworked to start the season, and as a result, his statistics started to slip, and he even got himself injured.
Now, Woll is at risk of experiencing the same fate. To make matters worse, the Leafs have their hardest slate of the season coming up. They are already last place in the Eastern Conference, and now have to face the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers.
When is Anthony Stolarz coming back?
Of course, with Anthony Stolarz back in the lineup, the Leafs would theoretically have their tandem back, and they would be able to split the net.
This is bad news for Woll, who is now going to have to carry his team, with very few breaks. Dennis Hildeby is not trusted right now, and Woll has to pick up the slack.
It is a bad situation that could lead to a worsening of Woll's performance. Or, worse yet, an injury that would derail the Leafs' season further.
Joseph Woll's stats since coming back
In his four starts so far this season, Joseph Woll has just one win, two regulation losses, and an overtime loss. He also has a goals-against average of 3.27 and a save percentage of .905.
Going into Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens, his stats looked a lot better. He had a goals-against average of 2.57 and a save percentage of .923.
Unfortunately, when you get pulled halfway through a game in which you allowed four goals on 25 shots, your overall statistics are going to suffer.
By the end of the season, it will be fascinating to see where Woll ends up, and if his performance puts the Leafs over the hump.
