While Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is on the verge becoming the NHL's all-time goal scoring leader, he's also not far away from another record.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is less than 10 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals, which has stood since his retirement from the NHL in 1999.
However, being the physical force on the ice that he is in addition to a dangerous offensive threat, Ovechkin can also become the NHL's all-time hits leader.
Alex Ovechkin needs like 300 more hits to become the NHL's all time hits leader and nobody is talking about it.

He is exactly 308 hits away (3,721) from tying the NHL's all-time leader, Cal Clutterbuck (4,029). He's also 201 hits away from tying Matt Martin's all-time mark of 3,922; both Martin and Clutterbuck spent the majority of their careers with the New York Islanders.
Not only has Ovechkin been known throughout his career as a lethal goal scorer, but he's also not afraid to lay out the body.
Former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones explained in 2023 how explosive Ovechkin was when paired with teammate Tom Wilson.
Him and [Tom] Wilson together on a line were like wrecking balls. When he is hitting and he is physical and he is forechecking and then he is scoring on top of it, he is one of the best players in the world. He is such a big body, too. I don't think people realize how big he is out there.
