Aliaksei Protas has emerged as a genuine star in the NHL, and it appears Washington knew it, as he reveals the shock he had by how much the team offered him.
The Washington Capitals have been one of the best stories in the NHL this season, and while all attention has been paid to Alex Ovechkin and
his chase for several records in NHL history, there's been plenty of other great performers around him.
One of those stories has been the breakout season of Aliaksei Protas, as the 24-year old has been on fire tallying 29 goals and 61 points in 68 games played, becoming a genuine star before our eyes in Washington.
Over the summer, the Capitals seemingly saw this coming as they locked him in to a five-year deal worth $3.375 million a year, and with four more years beyond this one, it may be the best valued contract in the NHL by the time it's done.
However, when he was offered the deal, Protas had a very different reaction, as his agent Dan Millstein has revealed his shock reaction, noting that the young star thought that was way too much for him.
«Isn't that too much for me?»
Given how greedy some athletes have been over the years, it's amazing to see someone so humble, and while he did only have 53 points at the NHL level coming into this season, the Capitals clearly saw what he could become, and now he's surpassed his total from the prior three years in just one season.
With Protas rolling and the depth of this Capitals team, there is plenty of optimism that they could make a genuine Cup run in 2025, and given that he's just 24, humble and a great player on both ends, they may have found another franchise star.
