Another goalie in the Detroit organization is last years first round pick Sebastian Cossa. He appears to be a big part of Detroit's future and he is in an unusual circumstance. Cossa has spent the last three season in junior hockey in Edmonton and now it looks like he will start the year in Toledo in the East Coast Hockey League. Typically first round picks don't play much in this league but Detroit is interested in Cossa getting as much playing time as possible. It's a long hockey season, so perhaps he will get some reps in and quickly move up through the system. In many instance, high draft picks play in the American Hockey League where they can continue to develop their skills. But Grand Rapids, Detroit's farm club, already has a few goalies there. Again, the Red Wings want Cossa playing. Perhaps playing in lower leagues will get him the confidence he needs to continue to progress through the organization.
Cossa might not be thrilled to hear this news, however if he does what he is asked to do he might not be there for long anyway. Players get hurt or don't play well and it's a long season. Additionally, Steve Yzerman knows what he's doing. He has a tremendous amount of knowledge and wisdom when it comes to being a general manager. This will be a short step in Cossa's long-term development.
