This year the Edmonton Oilers had a solid playoff run, but they unfortunately ended up getting bounced in the Conference Finals by the Colorado Avalanche. With the failure to reach the Cup Finals, the Oilers are now looking towards their future.
According to Hockey Insiders, management have informed both Mike Smith and Duncan Keith that they require each player to inform them of their potential retirement plans by July 1st. If they do retire, it will give Edmonton some much needed cap relief to try and get better in net.
The Oilers are clearly wanting to get prepared for next season and giving McDavid the opportunity to win a Cup in Edmonton. To do so the best opportunity for the Oilers is to find a clear upgrade in goal.
