Today the Minnesota Wild announced that they are making a change to their jerseys for next season. With the natural progression of adding ads to the jersey to generate revenue, it was only a matter of time. But this didn't go over well with fans.
The Minnesota Wild made the announcement on their official Twitter page, revealing they will be the first NHL team to add an official sponsor to their jerseys. The official sponsor is "TRIA Orthotics". TRIA is an orthopedic company and their logo will be smack dab right on the front of the Wilds' jersey.
The Wild will be the first in the NHL, but various leagues all over Europe including the KHL have had sponsors on their jerseys for years. Hopefully this isn't a step towards how uniforms look in the KHL.
We don't know if other NHL teams will follow suit but if I had to guess this is just the beginning of teams finding ways to exploit jersey space for revenue. This unfortunately is likely the way the NHL is heading.
