Earlier today it was announced that the Calgary Flames had signed Nazem Kadri to a 7 year contract. This move surprised many as it had been long rumoured that Kadri would be signing with the Islanders. After the signing the Flames immediately took to elevating their salary cap situation.
The Flames then announced they were trading Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens. Monahan has 1 year remaining on his deal with a cap hit of $6,350,000. It was clear moving this kind of salary was going to come at a price.
In 65 games last season, Monahan only posted 8 goals and 23 points. Now according to Nick Alberga the cost is in fact a hefty one.
Sounds like a 1st rounder going to MTL in deal.
That is a hefty price to pay, but getting the Flames under the salary cap was a major priority. This continues Brad Treliving's incredible off-season.
