Finnish club terminates the contract of Teemu Selanne's son
Leevi Selanne, son of Finnish hockey legend and Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne, is now looking for a new club after having his contract terminated on Friday.
In a post on Facebook on Friday, Hokki Kajaanin, who play in the second tier of Finnish hockey - Mestis, announced that they've decided to terminate Leevi Selanne's contract for the 2024-25 season, making him a free agent in Europe.
Note: the following was translated from Finnish.
"The player agreement between Leevi Selanne and Kajaani Hockey has been terminated in agreement for the 2024-2025 season. The option for the next season, that was in Atte Peltonen's contract, was also not used. We want to thank Leevi and Atte for their time in Kajaani and wish them all the best for the future! 🤝
Our own parents Samppa Kemppainen and Noa Tuomainen will also represent Hockey in the 2024-2025 season according to their agreements."
Hokki Kajaanin were the first professional club of Leevi Selanne's career after finishing up a two-year stint at Curry College in the United States. In 23 games for Hokki Kajaanin last season, Selanne had four points (two goals, two assists), 24 penalty minutes and had an even-rating. He also appeared in three games in the relegation round, but failed to record any points.
It wasn't going to be easy for Selanne to jump from a Division 3 NCAA school to playing in the second tier of professional hockey over in Finland. Living up to the Selanne name isn't easy given what his father did in the NHL and on the international stage, but there's no doubt Leevi will try to make a name for himself and now, he'll look for a fresh start with a new club.
