Some community members are concerned about the message that has been sent after a high school hockey player facing charges in an alleged hazing incident was given two awards at the end of the season. The awards were revoked the very next day.
In April of this year, three students at a rural Manitoba high school were charged with s----l assault with a weapon, s----l assault and forcible confinement over an alleged incident involving hazing rookies on their high school team.
In June, one of the players charged received two awards, which were taken away the next day. CBC would not name the school or the student in its report, but said it took place in the south-central Manitoba Prairie Spirit School Division. An anonymous community member told CBC it never should have happened.
The Prairie Spirit School Division told CBC that privacy restrictions don't allow schools in the district to share information regarding consequences in place for individual students. It said it's aware that some may see this as not enough being done to ensure something like this doesn't happen, but insisted safe participation and attendance are the top priorities.
