Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving wanted Brad Marchand on the team, but he was willing to do too much to go out and get him.
The Toronto Maple Leafs had plenty of players on their free agency list this past Summer, and there is no denying that Brad Marchand was one of them.
There were analysts who felt like the Florida Panthers wouldn't be able to bring back their big guns and would have to part ways with Marchand.
The Leafs were seen as frontrunners for the forward, and it could have been the perfect marriage between the Leafs and a player who always burns them in the postseason.
Of course, that is not what happened. Instead, Marchand stayed with the Panthers, and the Leafs missed out on a great signing.
Brad Marchand made it tough for the Maple Leafs
As it turns out, Marchand burned the Maple Leafs extremely hard, and it created a disastrous situation for general manager Brad Treliving.
Treliving had a trade in place for a roster player. However, he declined because he felt Marchand was a lock. In the end, he lost Marchand and the trade.
League sources familiar with the situation say that Toronto even passed on the possibility of acquiring another player in a June trade in order to protect the cap space that would have been needed to bring in Brad Marchand
This just goes to show that the Leafs were going all in on Marchand this Summer, but missed out big time. Ultimately, it made sense for Marchy to stay in Florida.
While the Leafs are better so far this season, Marchand is playing great hockey, and the Leafs would have loved to have him.
Next time, the team will just have to be a bit more careful when it comes to going full steam ahead on just one guy.
