Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews continues to deal with injuries this season, and it has caused his team lots of harm throughout the first half of the year.
Auston Matthews has not been healthy this season. The same could be said of last season, when it felt like his injury woes were never-ending.
Over the weekend, against the Detroit Red Wings, Matthews took a puck to the leg, and it kept him out of Tuesday's tilt with the New Jersey Devils.
Tonight, Matthews is back against the Winnipeg Jets. In fact, he has a goal in tonight's game, although the Leafs remain down 4-1.
Auston Matthews speaks on his injury
Prior to tonight's game, the captain spoke to the media about his injury, and how it has been affecting him since last weekend.
As you can imagine, Matthews was incredibly honest about the injury, noting that it was "worrisome" when it first happened.
Pretty worrisome. You never know what it could be. Obviously, it kind of caught me in a difficult spot and was pretty swollen for a few days.
At this stage, the Leafs just need Auston Matthews to need to be available. If he isn't available, this team isn't going to win.
The Leafs are currently near the bottom of the Atlantic Division standings, and now is the time for the team to start making some real moves.
Soon, the Olympic roster freeze will be upon us, and after that, it will be the trade deadline. If the Leafs aren't in a playoff spot, they will have to become sellers.
The key to making the postseason will have to be Matthews. If he can become the player he was two seasons ago, then maybe the Leafs have a chance.
