Ottawa Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark adorned his stick with pride tape, which previously would have been a violation of NHL rules until a recent change.
The National Hockey League briefly issued a moratorium on messages of personal expression by players, and they also decided that Pride-themed uniforms and stick tape were included.
However, the League reversed the decision in 2023; while pride sweaters have yet to return, a handful of players have hit warmups with pride-themed tape on their sticks since then.
Before tonight's game at Canadian Tire Center between the host Ottawa Senators and the divisional foe Tampa Bay Lightning, Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark participated in warmups with pride tape on his stick:
Multiple players in recent years have declined to participate wearing pride-themed warmup sweaters, notably
James Reimer and
Ivan Provorov.
The NHL recently reversed their ruling on Pride Tape
After consultation with the NHL Players' Association and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season
Great news for the hockey community today. Congratulations and thank you to all of you who made your voices heard in support of LGBTQ+ inclusion in hockey - especially the courageous Travis Dermott.
