Former NHL defenceman retires from hockey, returns to league as development coach

After parts of 13 seasons of professional hockey in the AHL, NHL and Germany, defenceman Zach Redmond has decided to call it a career and will be joining the Buffalo Sabres as a development coach.

Redmond, 35, was drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the seventh round in 2008 and went on to play for the Winnipeg Jets, Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres.

In 133 NHL games, Redmond had 38 points (nine goals, 29 assists), 50 penalty minutes and was a plus-12.

After ten seasons in North America, Redmond signed overseas in the German DEL with EHC Munich, where he'd spend the final three years of his career. Redmond's time in Germany was very successful, recording 112 points in 140 games and was named the DEL's best defenceman following the 2021-22 season. In his final season, Redmond won the DEL championship.
