Jakob Silfverberg inks deal with hometown team after NHL retirement
Just days after announcing his retirement from the National Hockey League, Swedish forward Jakob Silfverberg is returning home and has inked a deal with his former club.
On Monday morning, Brynas IF, who play in the second division in Sweden, HockeyAllsvenskan, announced that they've agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Jakob Silfverberg.

"The dialogue actually started already last summer, that's when it became serious that I would come home to Brynäs and play. Since I went over, it has always been there in my mind, but there my and Alcén's contact grew, so it was actually there somewhere that I made the decision that this would be my last season in the NHL, I am extremely excited about what is to come, says Jakob Silfverberg."
He added, "Series affiliation has not played a major role in my decision. There will be different conditions, but if it were HockeyAllsvenskan, everyone knows what the goal is, if it were SHL, the goal is to start setting out the journey towards a new gold. I'm ticked regardless but of course I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the team, they've had a fantastic season and deserve to go up."
Silfverberg, 33, spent parts of 12 seasons in the National Hockey League with the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks where he put up 373 points (168 goals, 205 assists) and 264 penalty minutes in 819 regular season games. He went on to add 45 points in 69 career games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Gavle, Sweden native spent several years in the Brynas IF system as a teenager and into the start of his professional career. He last suited up for them during the 2011-12 season before making the jump to North America that spring.
