The Boston Bruins are in a bit of a salary cap dilemma. As of right now, they only have 28 players under contract in the entire organization for next season and only have $4,937,500 available in cap space.

According to CapFriendly, the Bruins have 16 unrestricted free agents, including prominent names like Patrice Bergeron, Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov and David Krejci. They also have ten restricted free agents, a list which includes goaltender Jeremy Swayman.

In order to free up space to either re-sign some of the names mentioned above or look at options on the free agent market starting on July 1st, Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney is going to have to make some trades.

According to Bruins reporter Joe Haggerty, he says he would be shocked if Vezina Trophy finalist Linus Ullmark is back with the team next season.

"I'd be surprised at this point, given their salary cap situation if Ullmark is back w/the team." Haggerty said.

Ullmark, 29, had an unbelievable regular season where he sported a 40-6-1 record along with a 1.89 GAA, .938 save percentage and two shutouts. But during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Ullmark didn't bring that regular season success with him and had an .869 save percentage along with a 3.33 GAA in six appearances.

With Ullmark's performances not what the Bruins were expecting, Head Coach Jim Montgomery turned to Jeremy Swayman for the winner-take-all Game 7 at TD Garden. The Bruins ultimately lost that game after Carter Verhaeghe scored the overtime winner.

The Lugnvik (Sweden) native has two years remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $5 million. He's set to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2024-25 season.
