Ken Holland has been out of a job for a year, and now with Lou Lamoriello being fired, there is speculation he could wind up with the New York Islanders.
Back in the 1990's and early 2000's, the Detroit Red Wings were an absolute dynasty, and for the most part, Ken Holland played a key role in all of that success from the front office.
Then, he wound up with the Edmonton Oilers, and despite having two of the games best ever players, he couldn't will them to a Stanley Cup before the team and Holland parted ways following their Stanley Cup heartbreak in 2024.
While many expected that to be the end of Ken Holland in a front office role in the NHL, that may not be the case after all following a surprising report from ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.
According to Wyshynski, the departure of Lou Lamoriello from the New York Islanders and the extension of Rangers GM Chris Drury could lead to a situation that involves AGM Ryan Martin and Hollan to combine on Long Island as a front office duo.
Whatever you think of Holland's dreadful decision making in the final years as GM of the Edmonton Oilers, it's hard to deny the wealth of experience he brings as a General Manager of an NHL team, which will make him a genuine option for several teams in the league.
Ultimately, it's highly unlikely that we will ever see Holland in a role as GM again in the NHL, but as President or another role, there's certainly that opportunity, so don't be surprised if we see him continually linked to the Islanders this summer as they look to replace Lou Lamoriello and continue a re-tool to turn the franchise around.
